2022 Chalari Mataro - Frankland River
Vineyard
The Mataro was sourced from Swinney’s Powderbark vineyard in Frankland River. This vineyard sits on ironstone soils and with excellent elevation.
Meticulously grown at elevation in ironstone and loam soils the Mataro develops some amazing aromatics and a distinct ferrous character
Winemaking
The growing season and later than usual harvest of 2022 has delivered wonderful depth and complexity. We opted for whole-bunch ferments and some Beaujolais-inspired whole berry carbonic maceration which not only captures Mataro’s softer side but the green stalks adds a hint of savoury complexity. We also hand-plunge to bring out its beautiful colour, build structure and after all portions are blended, it gets a final press, then it’s all transferred to seasoned, re-toasted, 2 year old oak puncheons for 8 months before bottling with no fining and minimal sulphites added.
Tasting Notes
A nouveau style red made from Mourvèdre, light dry red that can be chilled. Appearance: Medium intensity ruby- red with clear rim
Nose: floral rose petal, sarsaparilla, boysenberry, mulberry, Sichuan pepper, tarragon with hints of wet ironstone rock
Palate: dry with light, very approachable light, dusty tannins. A delicious array of forest berry fruits, red apple skins, capsicum balanced soundly with crunchy acidity, all around a core of iron-rich minerality
ABV: 13.5%, TA: 4.8, pH: 3.84, RS: <0.1g/L
